Jay Thomas was an American Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian, and radio talk show host. He was best known for the television series Mork & Mindy, Cheers, Love & War, and Murphy Brown. His film credits include Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995) and The Santa Clause 2 (2002). Thomas was born Jon Thomas Terrell on July 12, 1948, in Kermit, Texas. His parents were Katherine and Harry Terrell. He had a brother named Timothy. He was raised on a plantation on the banks of the Atchafalaya River in south Louisiana. Thomas attended Jesuit High School in New Orleans. There he played football, wrestled, and was a member of the ROTC. He continued his education at Gulf Coast College, the University of West Florida, and the University of Tennessee. He held a Master’s degree in sociology from Jacksonville University.

CAREER
Thomas made his television debut in the late 1970s. He had a recurring role as “Remo DaVinci”, an Italian deli-owner on the sitcom Mork & Mindy. The show was created by Garry Marshall and stars Robin Williams (Mork) and Pam Dawber (Mindy). His next big role was that of “Eddie LeBec” on the NBC sitcom Cheers (1987-89). Thomas was cast as “Jerry Gold”, a tabloid talk show host on the CBS series Murphy Brown (1989-98). His performance earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series. He co-starred as “Russell Meyers” on Married People (1990-91). Thomas starred as “Jack Stein” opposite Susan Dey and John Hancock in Love & War (1992-95). He voiced the characters “Ares” for Hercules: The Animated Series (1998-99), and “Brett Morris” for American Dad! (2007-10). His television credits include Ink, Hung, Cold Case, Law, and Order: SVU, and the TV film Killing Mr. Griffin (1997). He was also a regular guest on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Thomas was cast as “Bill Meister” in the drama film Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995). The film was directed by Stephen Herek and stars Richard Dreyfuss. He starred opposite Greg Kinnear in A Smile Like Yours (1997). Other films include Straight Talk (1992) with Dolly Parton, Dragonfly (2002) with Kevin Costner, The Santa Clause 2 (2002) with Tim Allen, and Labor Pains (2009) with Lindsay Lohan. Thomas has also appeared in several theater productions throughout New York and Los Angeles. He performed in Woody Allen’s “Writers Bloc.” at the Atlantic Theatre NYC.

In addition to television/film, Thomas had a long career as a radio host and disc jockey. He started out as a sports announcer while he was studying at Gulf Coast College and Jacksonville University. He spent 3 years in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he worked as a morning DJ at WAYS-AM and WROQ-FM. Thomas eventually moved to New York. He worked at a handful of NYC stations, including 99X, WKTU, WXRK, and WEPN. He also worked at the station ‘KPWR’ in Los Angeles. Thomas began hosting The Jay Thomas Show on SiriusXM Satellite Radio in 2005. The program aired every Friday afternoon on the uncensored channel Howard 101.

Jay Thomas died on August 24, 2017, at the age of 69. His reported cause of death was cancer. He is survived by his wife, Sally Michelson, and his children, Sam, Jake, and J.T. Thomas was about 5ft 8in tall and he was of Italian ancestry. His net worth was estimated at $3 million prior to his death.
