Amanda Knox is an American writer who was convicted and acquitted in the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007. She was convicted twice, acquitted twice, and spent close to 4 years in an Italian prison. Amanda Marie Knox was born on July 9, 1987, in Seattle, Washington. Her mother, Edda Mellas, is a math teacher, and her father, Curt Knox, a Macy’s employee. She has three younger sisters, Deanna, Ashley, and Delaney. Knox spent her childhood in West Seattle where she attended Seattle Preparatory School. She later studied linguistics at the University of Washington.
MURDER OF MEREDITH KERCHER
At age 20, Knox moved to Perugia, Italy with hopes of attending the University for Foreigners. She roomed with British student Meredith Kercher. Kercher was 21, and both girls were majoring in linguistics. Shortly after her arrival, Knox met engineering student Raffaele Sollecito and the two began dating.
Meredith Kercher’s dead body was found in the apartment she shared with Knox on November 1, 2007. She reportedly died from knife wounds. Both Knox and Sollecito were convicted and sentenced to 26 and 25 years respectively. The two were acquitted and freed in October 2011. Their acquittals were overturned in 2013 by Italy’s Court of Cassation. Knox and Sollecito were convicted for a second time in February 2014. Their convictions were overturned by the Supreme Court of Italy in March 2015.
CAREER
Knox worked part-time while attending college. Her book, Waiting to Be Heard: A Memoir, was published in April 2013 by HarperCollins. It was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award for Best Memoir & Autobiography. Knox began working for the West Seattle Herald newspaper in 2014 as a freelance writer.
Knox was featured in the 2008 CBS 48 Hours documentary, A Long Way From Home. She was interviewed by Diane Sawyer in 2013 on ABC News 20/20. The segment was called ‘Murder Mystery: Amanda Knox Speaks’. It also marked her first interview since being freed. Knox was the subject of the Netflix documentary ‘Amanda Knox’ which was released on September 30, 2016. The 92-minute film features exclusive interviews with Knox, Sollecito, and Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini.
